Avoiding IT Project Waste

Management often bemoans the fact that IT projects fail to be delivered on time and within budget. And the truth is, the IT spending waste that occurs in our industry is at times mind-boggling. At F. Curtis Barry & Company, we currently have four clients—ranging in size from $7 million to $650 million in sales—all struggling with the same schedule and budget problems as they attempt to implement new order management and warehouse management systems. Another client invested $350,000 with one of the industry’s leading OMS companies, but after a failed implementation, backed off the project.

What’s at the root of this waste? It’s the lack of project management on both the client and the vendor side. Here are some tips based on the lessons we’ve learned that could help you avoid the same fate with your IT implementations.

  • It starts with the deal. Some projects should simply never be. Usually it begins when management accepts the vendor’s selling proposal, which turns out to be flawed. Take the case of one of our largest clients: They have been struggling for two years now to work with the vendor, basically to rewrite much of the vendor’s system. The client is determined because there is a huge potential ROI. But while it will be a big deal for the vendor when it gets finished, it is taking them off their commercial systems path. The client should have looked at the proposal more realistically at the start.
  • You have to have a plan. Vendor proposals are full of boilerplate—simple task schedules and bar graphs. The real plans for a complex systems implementation require all the details to be thought out, agreed to and then scheduled. One mistake companies make is that they don’t update the plan weekly; they may use it to get started, but then the updating is infrequent. Also, plans often don’t take dependencies into account; everybody involved is continually surprised because the major subtasks are not in synch with each other.
  • Who is in charge? Both the client and the vendor have to have a project manager. Too many times the client leaves that up to the vendor—and that’s a bad idea. For one thing, the vendor doesn’t know your business or organization. For another, it’s expensive. The client needs to be in control of the process and the implementation.
  • How often do you talk? As we all know, systems projects involve a lot of verbal and written communication, with documents constantly passing back and forth. It would seem on the surface that you are talking many times every day. But that’s really not the issue. You should have weekly meetings between the two parties, conducted by the two project managers, reviewing the total project and the schedule and resetting objectives, if necessary. Other critical parties can and should join, if available. Then the two project managers should circulate the updated schedule and meeting notes. Once you’re inside 30-45 days, you should be having a brief conversion meeting daily. This is an excellent way for all parties to stay committed to each other and to get the implementation done.

If you commit to follow these basics religiously, everything else should fall in line. As a result you’ll have a much better chance of finishing your IT project on time and within budget.

Learning The Basics Of An Ignition System

The following article has been provided free of charge by Jonathan Phillips of Everdrive.com, which provides used auto parts, Ford parts, and Honda parts. Learning The Basics Of An Ignition System The purpose of your car’s ignition system is to time a spark that ignites gas at the precise moment needed to power your engine. Several different parts work together to make this happen. Your car’s engine is basically a huge pump. Air and gas are pumped in, producing energy that turns the tires and moves the vehicle. That’s an oversimplification, but sufficient for learning how the components of the system work. Below, I’ll briefly describe the parts involved and take you through the process of igniting the gas and powering your engine. Parts And Their Jobs Your ignition system is comprised of spark plugs, a distributor (and cap), rotor, and coil. The coil is what transforms an electrical current from your car battery into a spark. When the coil successfully creates a spark (and it needs to be potent enough to actually ignite the fuel), the spark is transferred to your car’s distributor. The reason it’s called a distributor is because it spins and allocates the sparks from the coil to multiple spark plugs. It does that through the rotor. The rotor spins with the distributor and contacts the cylinders of the engine. When it does this, it transfers the sparks to the spark plug wires. At this point, the spark has nearly traveled to where it needs to be. Each of the spark plug wires is attached to the distributor cap through its own contact point. Those wires send the spark directly to the spark plugs which are mounted in your car’s cylinder head. When the gases from the fuel flow into the cylinder, the spark ignites them, causing combustion. The process I’ve just described happens over and over, tens of thousands of times while your car is in operation. A Seamless System Your ignition system is most effective when the sparks are precisely timed. In the past, this was done by employing a points-and-condenser module to tell the distributor when to allocate the sparks to the spark plugs. Today, most cars are equipped with computers (called ignition modules) that control the timing. They do so by notifying your car’s engine control unit about the placement of the pistons. If an ignition module fails, it’s usually necessary to replace it. Over the past few years, manufacturers have begun experimenting with “distributorless” ignition systems. Rather than a single coil creating the sparks needed to ignite the fuel, each spark plug has its own coil. That effectively eliminates the need for the distributor. It’s still considered a young technology, but holds significant promise.

His Business in California

A long time friend visited me last week in my house and we had great conversation. We were friends since we were in elementary and his attitude never changed. He is still my old friend like before. We never saw each other for a long time and that is why we asked each other about the things that makes us busy. He told me that he has a construction business in California but he is experiencing some problems now.

There were customers that fails to pay his company’s services and this problem makes his money to be on hold and he can’t use for capital to other clients. Then I told him to ask for a help from a company that will act accordingly on his behalf. They will serve the california preliminary notice for him. They will do their steps to collect his company’s receivable even it will lead them to pursue a legal action. I am happy that my friend already achieved his goal of having his own business and I am glad that I helped him by giving information that will help him secure the payments that he should receive.
